In Los Angeles, California’s car window tint laws, governed by Vehicle Code Section 26708, prioritize driver safety and visibility. Front side windows must allow at least 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT), meaning 70% of light must pass through. Aftermarket films should exceed 88% VLT due to factory tint. Rear side and back car windows can have any darkness, but tinted rear windows require dual side mirrors. Windshields may only have a non-reflective tint on the top 4 inches (AS-1 line). Red, amber, blue, or mirrored tints are prohibited. Medical exemptions allow darker tints (minimum 35% VLT) with a physician’s certification, but not at night.
