Tesla Window Tinting & PPF Los Angeles: Complete Model Guide (2026)

Los Angeles has more Teslas per capita than almost anywhere on earth. But those massive glass roofs, panoramic windshields, and camera-studded pillars create unique challenges that generic tint shops aren't equipped to handle. At Rapid Window Tinting in Hollywood, we've installed XPEL ceramic tint, PPF, and ceramic coatings on hundreds of Teslas. This guide covers everything you need to know, model by model.

Why Tesla Window Tinting Is Different

Most tint shops treat a Tesla like any other car. That's a mistake. Tesla glass is tempered and coated differently — using the wrong film or improper heat guns can crack the glass or void your Tesla warranty. The panoramic roof on Model Y and Model 3 covers nearly the entire cabin, meaning heat rejection matters far more than on traditional sedans. And the camera pillars require precision cutting to avoid blocking Tesla's Autopilot and FSD sensors. We use XPEL XR Prime and XPEL Prime XR Plus — both rated for Tesla glass — and we cut every panel using a digital plotter, not a razor blade.

Tesla Model Y Window Tinting

The Model Y is our most common Tesla job. The full glass roof spans from the windshield to the rear hatch, making it the hottest car interior in our lineup when untinted. We recommend XPEL XR Prime 35% on the side windows and 50% on the panoramic roof for the best combination of visibility, heat rejection, and legal compliance with California's 70% front window rule. XPEL XR Prime blocks 98% of UV and up to 88% of infrared heat — significantly more than standard dyed film at the same shade. Installation takes 3–4 hours for a full Model Y.

Tesla Model 3 Window Tinting

The Model 3 has a large rear glass panel and a smaller glass roof section above the front seats. The rear window's steep rake angle makes it one of the trickier installs in any tint shop — improper heat forming leaves bubbles or creases at the corners. We've done hundreds of Model 3s and have the pattern dialed. Popular choices: 35% XPEL XR Prime on all windows for a uniform look, or 20% on the rear and sides with 50% up front for maximum privacy. The entire install typically runs 2.5–3 hours.

Tesla Model S and Model X Window Tinting

The Model S is a luxury sedan with a traditional fixed rear windshield — easier to tint than the Model 3's curved glass. The Model X is the complex one: the falcon-wing doors, large panoramic windshield, and second-row skylights require methodical panel-by-panel work. Both are flagship vehicles where we typically recommend XPEL Prime XR Plus, our top ceramic film, for maximum heat rejection without compromising the premium look. Full Model X tinting takes 4–5 hours. Model S runs about 3 hours.

Tesla Paint Protection Film (PPF) in Los Angeles

Tesla paint is notoriously soft and prone to rock chips, especially on the hood, front bumper, and A-pillars. XPEL Ultimate Plus PPF is a self-healing urethane film that absorbs impacts and scratches and then heals itself in the sun. For most Tesla owners we recommend at minimum a partial front end package (hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors, A-pillars) starting around $1,200–$1,500. Full body PPF runs $4,500–$6,500 depending on the model. XPEL PPF is backed by a 10-year manufacturer's warranty and won't yellow. We're a certified XPEL installer with over 500 PPF installs.

Tesla Ceramic Coating Los Angeles

Ceramic coating is the next step after PPF. Applied over the paint (or over PPF for the ultimate combo), XPEL Fusion Plus ceramic coating creates a semi-permanent hydrophobic layer that repels water, contaminants, and light scratches. On a Tesla it also makes washing far easier — important because Tesla's soft paint attracts swirl marks during hand washing. Our ceramic coating packages for Tesla start at $695 for a base single-coat application and go up to $1,495 for our premium multi-layer package with paint correction included. Ceramic coating over PPF is the stack we recommend for anyone who wants their Tesla looking new for the next decade.

California Window Tint Laws for Tesla Owners

California law requires front side windows to allow at least 70% of light through (70% VLT). Rear side windows and the rear windshield can be any darkness on vehicles with exterior mirrors. The Model Y and Model 3's panoramic roofs are technically rear windows and can legally go to 5% VLT — though we recommend 50% for comfort and visibility. We install only California-legal tint on front windows and provide a certificate of compliance with every job. If you receive a fix-it ticket, bring it to us and we'll measure your tint for free.
